The Mi’Kmaq called it Ogomkega, the place of departure. With the passage of winter and the arrival of spring the first inhabitants of Queens County made their way down the Mersey River to summer encampments along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. This is an ancient canoe route which has served canoeists for thousands of years.
