Information
As part of the New Horizons Project, the Barrington and Area Community Garden Club, in collaboration with the Tri County Local Food Network and the Tri County Women’s Centre, Shelburne location, established a community garden in the Barrington area.
A core group of community volunteers was very keen to establish a community garden and worked with the Municipality of Barrington to acquire a plot of land on Sherose Island. Sherose Island is becoming a major gathering point for the community as the municipality has established recreation facilities and a community centre on the island.
Because it was a brand new garden space, a lot of the energy went into developing the site the first year 2010. It was a mix of young people, seniors, and community volunteers who made it happen.
There are ten plots in production and young and old are having fun growing food. Information sessions on basic gardening techniques have been provided so no one felt discouraged or overwhelmed.
The group of volunteers who established the garden established sent a notice to the schools to name the community garden. The name that won out was “The Sunshine Garden”. Plans to organize information sessions on food production, preparation, and preservation in the fall are under way.
