Information
The Women's Centre offers a variety of services including:
Individual supportive counseling.
Programming based on the needs and wants of women.
Going to appointments with you (lawyer, doctor, court, Community Services, etc).
Work on Community Development issues such as youth homelessness, food security, women and tobacco, sexual violence, women's and youth access to community based health services, and youth and illicit drugs.
Assistance filling out applications, resumes, or government forms
We strive to be as accessible, reaching women and girls throughout the Tri-Counties by; offering programs and services, satellite offices, a toll free number and a primary location in Yarmouth.
By providing the tools to intervene in a crisis women and girls face, we are able to relieve poverty and barriers in their lives and assist them in moving forward in achieving their educational, work, and life goals.
Programs
Path to a Healthy Lifestyle - This program is for women who are interested in exploring ways to adopt a healthier lifestyle. This might include decreasing smoking, healthier food choices, becoming more active and/or meeting new people. The program will include both a walking or jogging component as well as information sharing and discussions on becoming motivated to make positive changes to our lives. A variety of topics including nutrition, motivation, footwear/clothing for working out, and yoga will be covered. This program is for women only and is offered in a supportive and safe environment.
Women Moving Forward- This program takes a look at women and the issues they face on a daily basis. The program covers a variety of topics including self‐esteem, communication, goal setting, body image, anger as a positive force, coping with change, and stress management. The program focuses on women supporting women to take control of their life and to start their journey. This program also allows the flexibility and safe space to address issues as they may come up during the program.
Learn to Run For Smokers - The Learn to Run program is for smokers, and recent quitters, who wish to become more physically active, and train to walk or run a 5km distance. The program focuses on improving physical fitness whilst educating participants about the benefits of exercise, proper nutrition, tobacco cessation and other useful topics. The aim is to finish the 8 week program with an organized 5km fun run. For more information call 742-0085. This program is open to men and women. Voices: A Program Of Self‐Discovery and Empowerment
Voices is a program for girls in grades 7, 8 and 9 and focuses on exploring their unique traits and strengths, thoughts, feelings and ideas, relationships, taking care of yourself, dealing with stress, expressing anger, decision-making, drugs and alcohol, healthy sexuality, support and celebrating who you are. We will be offered this program in 8 Junior High Schools throughout the Tri-Counties this fall.
S.T.E.P. Program (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting of Teens) - This is a program that was developed in response to the special challenges of parenting teenagers in the world today. The program looks at effective communication, discipline and problem solving. This program will start again once we have enough participants.
