Description & Services

Information

Founded in 1983, Bridgeway Academy has operated for the past 30 years with the idea that people with learning disabilities can learn and do anything if taught in a way that works for them. Since the day our doors first opened, Bridgeway has helped to empower hundreds of students, teaching them to become self-advocates through a better understanding of their unique set of assets and needs.

Bridgeway is not a forever school. Our responsibility is to equip students with the tools and knowledge they need to be successful in their next stage of life; be it university, college, trade school or a career.

Our students graduate Bridgeway believing in themselves, with an understanding of their learning disabilities and the ability to advocate for the services they need to succeed. Today, we operate schools in Dartmouth, Truro and Yarmouth and work with close to 100 students.

Bridgeway Academy is a Designated Special Education Facility in the province of Nova Scotia. We provide individualized programming for students who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Our students are all average or above-average intelligence, but struggle with specific neurological disorders that impact their ability to store, process, retrieve or communicate information.

When a student is accepted to Bridgeway, we work with the family, psychologist and other professionals to develop an individualized program. Our focus initially is on remediation, but as the student's skills improve, we'll adjust the program and increase curriculum delivery.

When a student's skills are back up to the level of their peers, we'll work with the student and the family to help transition them back to the public school or post-secondary school system.

We also have an after-school tutoring program Turning Tides Community Outreach.
